Today's Picture: Okavango Delta Sunset
December 6, 2007

Sunset in Okavango Delta

Photo Details: Sunset in Botswana's Okavango Delta, the scene dominated by two tall Fan palms (Hyphaene petersiana) that are so typical of the area.
Camera: Canon EOS 400D; Lens: Canon EOS 70-300 IS Zoom; Focal Length: 95mm; Shutter speed: 1/800; Aperture: f5; ISO: 200.

Additional Info: Fan palms (also known as llala or ilala palms) are not only a visually striking component of the Okavango, they also play an immensely important role in the sustenance of the Delta's inhabitants, both animals and humans. These majestic trees grow up to 20m high with a bare stem that often shows a slight swelling in the middle of the trunk. As the name "Fan palm" suggests, the leaves are fan-shaped. This is the main distinguishing feature when compared with the only other palm species in the Delta, the Wild date palm (Phoenix reclinata), which has feather-shaped leaves.

Are Pay-Per-Play Ads the "Next Big Thing"?
December 10, 2007

Pay-Per-Play audio ads are being promoted as a new and "revolutionary" form of Internet advertising "set to take the Web by storm".

One must wonder whether this is merely more of the Internet hype we've come to expect from the Internet marketing crowd, or are PPP ads really going to change internet advertising as we know it?

In a nutshell, pay-per-play ads are brief (5 second) audio commercials that play automatically when a visitor opens a web page. And, as the name implies, the web publisher get paid each time the ad is played. This is very different from most traditional web advertising, where the publisher only gets paid when the visitor takes action, like clicking on an ad or filling in a form.

On a site like mine, most visitors are merely browsing and looking for pictures rather than researching products to buy, so they're less motivated to click on ads. So pay-per-play ads could be a bonus for photography sites, but could also antagonise website visitors. However, the ads last just five seconds and are only played once after someone clicks on a web page, so should be acceptable to most people.

I intend testing PPP ads on some of my Gallery pages early next year and will have to wait until then to see if there's any negative reaction. If you're interested, you can find out more about my impressions of Pay-Per-Play audio ads. You can also earn residual income by getting in on the ground floor to promote this form of advertising.
