This photo of a young bateleur was taken in the Kruger National Park, near Satara Camp. We were trying an Adventure Trail, a recent offering in Kruger where you can take your vehicle on tracks normally off limits to visitors. The big advantage is that only four vehicles per day are allowed on the trail, so if you come across a good sighting, you're likely to be the only one there. When we spotted this young bateleur perched low in a tree close to the road, we were able to spend time there, watching and photographing without hordes of other vehicles causing unneccessary disturbance.

The uniform brown color and blue bill distinguish an immature specimen from the adult Bateleur, which has black, white and chestnut plumage and a red bill.
