Camera: Canon EOS 50D; Lens: Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L USM; Focal Length: 400mm; Aperture: f/5.6; Shutter Speed: 1/125; ISO: 400.

Location: This close-up picture of a black-backed jackal was taken at 5.47pm in Mashatu Game Reserve in Botswana's remote Tuli Block region.

Mashatu, owned by the Rattray family, is not as well-known as their luxurious Mala Mala Game Reserve in the Sabi Sand, but is more affordable for those wanting an authentic African safari.

While you won't see the Big Five in Mashatu as there are no buffalo or rhino, you should come across plentiful herds of elephant plus lion, leopard, and cheetah that prey on herds of impala, wildebeest, and eland. Zebra and giraffe are also common residents of Mashatu.

Permitted Uses: See Terms of Use.
