Jackal walking in sandy terrain, side view Caption: Black-backed jackal (Canis mesomelas) walking across sandy terrain, Mashatu Game Reserve, Tuli Block, Botswana.  © Scotch Macaskill

Camera: Canon EOS 300D (Canon Digital Rebel); Lens: Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM; Focal Length: 340mm; Aperture: f/6.3; Shutter Speed: 1/800; ISO: 400.

Location: The jackal above was photographed at 4.25pm during an afternoon/evening game drive in Mashatu Game Reserve, Botswana. The animal was walking along, pretty chilled and apparently not too concerned about our vehicle that was fairly close.

Although not as popular among safari tourists as Botswana's more famous game reserves such as Moremi in the Okavango Delta and Chobe National Park, Mashatu is nevertheless an accessible and affordable safari destination offering a good selection of wildlife.

Large herds of elephant inhabit the area, plus predators like lion, leopard, and cheetah that prey on herds of impala, wildebeest and eland.
