Cheetah Licking Front Paw

Cheetah licking its paw Caption: Cheetah licking its paw while grooming and cleaning itself after feeding on antelope, Mashatu Game Reserve, Botswana. © Scotch Macaskill

Camera: Canon EOS 50D; Lens Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L USM; Shutter speed: 1/400; Aperture: f/5.6; ISO: 400.

Cheetah, even though their claws do not retract into sheaths like other cats (as can be seen in the photo above), are nevertheless classified as true cats, albeit highly specialized ones.

And, like other cats, they spend a great deal of time grooming themselves by licking and cleaning their fur. Also, like domestic cats but unlike lions and leopards, cheetah purr when voicing pleasure or satisfaction.
