Cheetah on the Prowl

Cheetah on the prowl, close-up view Caption: Cheetah on the prowl, close-up view, Mashatu Game Reserve, Botswana.© Scotch Macaskill

Camera: Canon EOS 50D; Lens Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L USM; Shutter speed: 1/4000; Aperture: f/5.6; ISO: 400.

Cheetah hunt primarily during daylight hours (and also by moonlight) as they rely on their vision rather than sense of smell to detect prey.

The above photo, showing a cheetah apparently on a mission, was taken as the cat moved through open ground. It was winter and the area was stark brown with no vegetation. For this reason I decided to convert the image to black and white as this places all emphasis on the animal, its shape, and posture.
