Hippo Wallowing in Shallows of Chobe River

Hippo in river shallows Caption: Hippo (Hippopotamus amphibius) wallowing and feeding in shallows near the banks of the Chobe River, Chobe National Park, Botswana.  © Scotch Macaskill

Camera: Canon EOS 350D; Lens: Canon 100-400 IS Zoom.

Location: Botswana's Chobe National Park, covering 10,566 sq km, extends from the Chobe and Linyanti rivers in the north to Moremi Game Reserve in the south. There are no fences around Chobe or Moremi and animals cross freely from one to the other.

Chobe itself has one of the greatest concentrations of game in Africa and is renowned for its huge and growing elephant population that is seen by many as a threat to the future of the park.

For anyone visiting Chobe, a definite recommendation is a sunset cruise down the Chobe River, watching the herds of elephant, buffalo and other game congregate along the water's edge as the sun sinks below the horizon.
