Location: The Kruger National Park, covering 18,989 square km (7,332 sq miles), is the country's
largest wildlife sanctuary and offers a safari experience that ranks with the best on the continent.
Established in 1898, the park is host to an impressive diversity of flora
and fauna, including 507 different birds and 147 types of mammal. In addition to the
"Big Five" - elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo and rhino - there are also large numbers of giraffe, zebra, wildebeest,
hippo, antelope, and hyena.
Kruger Park is chiefly a self-drive destination, making it more affordable than many national parks.
Accommodation options range from chalets and bungalows to camp sites and now also include upmarket private safari lodges.
