Location:
Hwange National Park, situated in the north-western corner of Zimbabwe, is the country's largest wildlife reserve,
covering an area of 14 540 sq km (1,462, 000 ha). This massive expanse of wilderness, roughly the size of Belgium,
is home to the greatest diversity of animal and bird species in Zimbabwe.
Hwange was declared a game reserve in 1928, largely because the area was regarded as useless for farming or
other purposes. Comprising expanses of woodland and Kalahari sands that lack surface water for most of the year,
it is only the provision of artificial water supplies that has allowed Hwange's inhabitants to form stable
breeding populations.
Today the park has huge herds of elephants, while large herds of buffalo, eland, wildebeest, zebra and impala
can be seen congregating at the waterholes. Visitors can also expect to see the rare sable and roan antelope and,
with luck, big cats like lion, leopard and cheetah.
