standing in long grass, Kruger National Park, South Africa. Photo: © Scotch Macaskill.
Location: The Kruger National Park is South Africa's flagship wildlife reserve and
offers a game-viewing and safari experience that ranks with the best in Africa.
The park covers nearly 2 million hectares and is home to an impressive diversity of flora and fauna, including
507 different birds and 147 types of mammal. In addition to the "Big Five" - elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo and rhino -
there are also large numbers of giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, hippo, antelope, and hyena.
Kruger Park is mainly a self-drive destination with a good infrastructure of roads, although many safari operators
are now offering guided tours in specially constructed game-viewing vehicles.
For those overnighting in the reserve, accommodation options include chalets, bungalows, tents,
bush lodges and private safari lodges. The official website is http://www.sanparks.org/parks/kruger/.
Camera Equipment: The photograph was taken with a Canon EOS Elan film camera and
Canon EOS 80-200mm F2.8 lens, with a touch of fill-in flash. The camera-mounted flash has caused the large
highlight in the lion's right eye. To avoid this effect, it's best to position the flash to the side of the camera if possible.
