Elephant Herd in Tight-Knit Group

Elephant female herd Caption: Elephant herd (Loxodonta africana) comprising mothers and youngsters banding together in tight defensive formation for mutual protection, Tuli Block, Botswana.  © Scotch Macaskill

Camera: Picture taken with a Canon EOS film camera and Canon EOS 80-200mm F2.8 lens, using slide film scanned with Nikon Coolscan.

Location: The Tuli Block is situated in the eastern corner of Botswana, bordering Zimbabwe to the north and South Africa to the south.

Although not as well-known as Botswana's Moremi Game Reserve and Chobe National Park, the area supports an excellent variety of wildlife including large herds of elephant, ensuring good game viewing for safari visitors. Predators such as lion, leopard, cheetah, and hyena are attracted by the wildebeest, kudu, eland, and impala that migrate through the area. For bird-watchers, there are more than 350 species of birds in the area.
